Utah poverty simulation helps build empathy

During Community Action Partnership of Utah’s poverty simulation for the upcoming Utah Poverty Conference at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley City. The exercise is designed to broaden understanding of the day-to-day struggles of people trying to survive with few means and little money.

Participants will role-play as TANF recipients, disabled or senior citizens on social security and will interact with human service agencies, grocers, pawnbrokers, bill collectors, job interviewers, police officers and others in a series of four 15-minute “weeks.” Play money will be used but CAP representatives say the role play — and surviving poverty — is no game.
