Empathy expert to speak in Charlotte

Dr. Bruce Perry will speak at 11:15 a.m. April 11 at a conference – “Empathy: The Tie That Binds” – at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 3400 Beatties Ford Road. Sponsors are Mecklenburg Medical Alliance and Endowment and Area Health Education Center. Tickets for the luncheon are $35 per person, $260 for a table for eight. See www.mmaeonline.com/empathy

Like President Obama, Dr. Bruce Perry thinks we have an “empathy deficit.”

But Perry’s not taking sides in any political argument.

He doesn’t believe Democrats are more empathetic than Republicans or vice versa.

But he does think our children are growing up with less compassion and less capacity for empathy than those of earlier generations.

The Mecklenburg Medical Alliance and Endowment (MMAE) has partnered with Charlotte AHEC to bring Dr. Bruce Perry, author of Born for Love: Why Empathy is Essential and Endangered, for a comprehensive program on the vital role empathy plays in human relationships. We invite parents, medical and mental health professionals, educators to learn about how empathy develops and why it is essential for our development into healthy adults.
