Education is about more than exam results

The real challenge is to make the same social capital available to state school pupils that the private sector provides, argues Simon Lebus

Just imagine – August 2020 – the Education Secretary appears in the media to praise ever – increasing levels of empathy among A Level students. Meanwhile his opposition counterpart complains that standards of empathy are not what they used to be.

Absurd? Of course, but no more so than the proposition that we can capture all the things we want of an education using the crude instrument of exams – and I speak as the head of a group of exam boards.
