Architect, watercolorist and author Sim Van Der Ryn has been pushing for ecological design for decades, now he calling for people to go deeper in his new book ‘Design for an Empathic World: Reconnecting People, Nature, and Self.’
Q: Why does empathic design matter?
Empathy is particularly important in this culture in this point in time, particularly in the political world. It’s every person for themselves.
A: Empathy is particularly important in this culture in this point in time, particularly in the political world. It’s every person for themselves. We don’t really care about others. But that’s not true of everyone. And with (Hurricane) Sandy, neighbors were helping neighbors. But the larger message still is about money and consumption. Just look at Marin: The NIMBYism is frightening and discouraging. It didn’t used to be that way.
